Carol Knowles has been involved in performing and teaching in the Rapid City area for the past 34 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Wyoming and a Master’s degree with an emphasis in Suzuki pedagogy from Western Illinois University. Her teachers have been Mary Shiba, Robert Mathews, Brian Hanly and Lois Shepheard .

 

        22 years of her teaching has been in the Rapid City Area Schools as a middle and elementary school orchestra director. Carol has been with the Black Hills Suzuki School for 27 years. She has performed with the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra , Black Hills Chamber Orchestra and the Black Hills Symphony String Quartet for more than 30 years and is currently serving as concertmaster for the Symphony. Carol instructs private Suzuki and traditional violin and viola students from ages 3 – 65. She has also served as an adjunct violin/viola faculty professor to Black Hills State University.

 

         Carol is married to Bruce Knowles, conductor of the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, has two sons and a cat named Oreo. Cullen (viola) and Patrick (violin) studied with Charlie Savot in the Black Hills Suzuki School from ages 4-18. Both still play and perform on their instruments. In her spare time Carol does beadwork, cooks, reads and travels with her family.
